I was sent an email by the St Petersburg Times questioning the comicbook industry and it's future.
Here's that email...I would like your thoughts and opinions on this matter and if you like you may email the SPTimes directly as there is a link at the end of the message.
OK. More than a week after getting back from Orlando I?m finally getting back to reporting on the increasing mainstream-i-zation of the comics industry. There are two things at issue here I think: the marketability ? the movies and the higher sales ? and also the sense that comics are getting (or have gotten) to the point where more people from more walks of the world see comics/graphic novels as more ?legitimate? as art and/or literature. 1. Is that true? 2. If it is true why has that happened now? 3. WHO is making it that way (who is buying them and who is selling them)? I know these are broad things ? BROOOOAAAAAD ? but I?d like to just get going a loose informal e-conversation if that works for everybody. Thanks so much. And if you want to e-mail this to others in the industry you feel would have good stuff to say, well, the more the merrier. Look forward to hearing from you all. In my eyes, once Mr. Ronald Reagan himself classified comics as a "legitimate" source of education and reading material... it solidified what all of us as kids felt about comics the whole time. Comics are for real and are here to stay in some form or another. As marketable tools? yes As entertaining devices? yes As educational tools? yes I feel that the comic industry is all of these things and much more. Is the industry being abused by some? yes... However, it's the majority desire to make something of themselves in life and to do so with passion for what they do which keeps the business going. PASSION... if that is lost, then there is no point other than the money. When that happens, I feel the industry will have died. just my two cents worth for what it's worth... thanks for listending. You may relay any information here that you see fit.
